Our Circular Approach to Responsible Beauty
When our founder, Holly Schleich, founded Eye of Horus over a decade ago, she started with a clear philosophy: clean formulations, without compromising on performance.
That thinking has shaped our entire approach to ingredient formulation, responsible packaging, and the full lifecycle of what we create. At Eye of Horus, beauty and environmental responsibility aren’t separate ideas. They’re considered together, from the very beginning.
In honour of World Environment Day, we’re sharing what that looks like in practice: from refillable design and clean formulations to our TerraCycle partnership.
Refillable Beauty Essentials
We introduced our Refillable Collection in 2022 as a step towards a more circular approach to beauty.
Sustainability as a beauty brand presents ongoing challenges. Packaging must preserve formula integrity, which often means using complex, multi-material components that are difficult to recycle. Navigating these realities means making considered choices, investing in better materials, and rethinking traditional systems to move closer to a circular model.
Rather than greenwashing these challenges away, we’re continuing to invest in and improve our packaging to present a new way of approaching beauty bag essentials.
Our Refillable Collection
The products we’ve developed to be used, refilled, and used again.
Lipstick Matte and Satin
A signature in every beauty ritual, our refillable lipsticks deliver rich, lasting colour with a creamy satin or matte finish. The packaging is thoughtfully designed using alumnium, an infinitely recyclable metal, so you can switch shades or restock your favourite without unnecessary waste.
Eyeshadow Compacts
Artisan-crafted in Byron Bay, our eyeshadow compacts feature finely milled formulas in sixteen considered shades. The compacts are refillable and endlessly customisable.
Seven Seed Sacred Oil & Regenerative Night Serum
Plant-powered skincare in refillable glass bottles. Both our Seven Seed Sacred Oil and Regenerative Night Serum provide luxurious care with minimal environmental impact.
Pressed Powders
Our skin-enhancing pressed powders are designed for silky, weightless coverage. Encased in a refillable compact with nine ten shades to find your best match.
Complexion Duo
Eight essential shades of bronze, blush, and illuminator in highly pigmented formulas. The complexion duo palettes are another one of our products crafted in Byron Bay, endlessly refillable with customisable palettes.
Our beauty recycling partnership
Packaging is one piece; where it goes when you’re done, another. For hard-to-recycle beauty items, or those that can’t be refilled, our TerraCycle Zero Waste Box™ responsibly recycles your empties to give them a second life.
Our Eye of Horus Zero Waste Box™ can be used to recycle cosmetic or skincare packaging, including items such as mascara tubes, lipstick containers, eyeliner pencils, concealer and foundation sticks, and other items that can’t be recycled at commercial waste facilities.
We encourage customers to mail 3 or more beauty empties at a time to be responsibly disposed of, or drop them to our Byron Bay concept store for recycling.
Clean beauty ingredients and formulations
Responsible packaging is only part of the story. What goes inside matters just as much.
Every ingredient is ethically sourced. We work with suppliers who share our values, ensuring traceability and integrity from source to finished product.
Cruelty-free, paraben-free, vegan-friendly. Our formulas use only the finest, naturally derived, plant-based organic ingredients. We’re working towards a fully vegan collection, with only our Goddess Mascara and Pencils currently containing ethically sourced beeswax.
Small-batch, locally made. Where possible, we produce locally in small batches, reducing waste while supporting skilled makers. We value intentional production over mass-production.
Our commitment as a responsible beauty brand
Today, 86% of our range is refillable, recyclable, or crafted using responsible materials.
Where we stand:
60% of our range is made from post-consumer recycled (PCR) or recyclable materials.
54% are refills or refillable.
10% have responsible packaging updates in production.
While we’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come, responsible packaging isn’t something we consider solved. Every choice involves trade-offs. Some formulas require packaging we're still working to improve. Some materials don't yet exist at the scale we need. We're not claiming perfection, but we’re measuring progress and investing in meaningful solutions.
As we continue to evolve as a responsible clean beauty brand, we're focused on building better systems and continuing to be transparent about the work still left to do.
