A Moment with Seann Miley Moore

Seann Miley Moore is a Filipino-Australian singer, who has performed all over the world and is about to take on the iconic role of Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, touring across Australia. Known for their magnetic stage presence and pushing boundaries outside the heteronormative, Seann is a celebrated voice in Australian entertainment and a proud advocate for queer visibility. We caught up with Seann ahead of Pride Month to talk performance, beauty rituals, and the celebration of queer identity.

How has your relationship with beauty evolved over the years, both personally and professionally?

Professionally, I put on a lot of makeup for stage lighting - a full face for a full impact, full beauty spotlight - to get through hour-and-a-half long shows. But I really sort of love clean, easy products like the Complexion Duo Universal, the Goddess Mascara, the Lip Elixir, the Second Skin that includes the SPF, and The Seven Seed Oil - it saves my soul.
I’m a five-product girl when it comes to everyday beauty, because I wear so much makeup on stage that I need to help my skin breathe.

Are there any beauty rituals or looks that make you feel most powerful or affirmed?

Well, I think the look I have now - I kind of love. My Complexion Duo Universal gives me that medium coverage, and then a statement red Rihanna lip - I love it. It’s kind of gorgeous, kind of cute. But baby pink blush? I love it.

You're about to take on the iconic role of Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, touring across Australia. What excites you most about bringing this character to audiences nationwide?

Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a beacon of queer liberation. John Cameron Mitchell and Steven Trask have, you know, trailblazed this queer text into both film and theatre. For me, wearing the blonde wig - so to speak - is an absolute honour. It’s transformed how I see makeup physically, and emotionally as an actor, allowing me to tell her story in the most truthful and honest way.
It’s taught me amazing lessons. She’s like a phoenix rising from the ashes, saying “I’m here, reclaiming my story, reclaiming my narrative, and I will not be erased.” This role is a dream.

Who are the icons or mentors, past or present — who have shaped your journey?

Well, I always say it’s my Filipino titas - they’ve always been a crazy bunch of fearless unapologetic women who get what they want and are totally wild. And of course, my mama bear - I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. Love you - thank you for the Pinole recipe. Aunties: pioneers. Period.

How do you stay grounded and proud in spaces that may not fully understand or accept fluid identities?

I really don’t see any evil eyes around me - I just keep strutting in my fabulous winter boots. Gorgeous. I strut in who I am. I’ve cut out all the hate, negativity and noise. I’m only in a space of celebration, liberation and sunny joy.
And sure, in some instances, that negativity exists - but baby, this sunny light shines so bright that the haters are blinded.

What would you say to young queer people who feel pressure to conform in order to succeed or feel safe?

It's a universal thing - growing up different, queer. I think everyone wants to find their place in the world. The pressure to conform can be really hard, especially when you’re growing up.
But baby, whatever you feel - here, in your gut - that’s what you do. Just go for it. Feel your power - you’re not wrong.

What advice would you give to brands or creators who want to authentically support and uplift queer voices?

Our visibility is really everywhere - in all spaces - from theatre to film - just by being authentically ourselves. It’s exciting that beautiful brands like Eye of Horus create a space for dolls like me - a space to feel beautiful, to feel empowered.
That’s the power of makeup: you can be whoever you want to be, present however you want to present. And that’s the beautiful thing about this gorgeous space.
